In this week's episode of Transcending Trauma, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Sam King, an expert in animal-assisted therapy, to explore the transformative role of therapy dogs in mental health and trauma recovery. Our conversation was so insightful that we divided it into two parts, delving deep into the science, the stories, and the heartwarming ways therapy dogs are changing lives.

From hospitals to schools, rehabilitation centres to private therapy sessions, these incredible animals offer far more than just companionship. They provide comfort, reduce anxiety, and even help regulate the nervous system—all of which are essential for those healing from trauma.

Part 1: The Science Behind Therapy Dogs

In the first part of our conversation, Sam King shared the fascinating research behind why therapy dogs are so effective. Science tells us that interacting with dogs can:

·       Lower cortisol (stress hormone) levels – Just petting a dog can help regulate the body's stress response.

·       Boost oxytocin (the "love" hormone) – This is the same hormone released when a mother bonds with her child, helping create feelings of connection and safety.

·       Aid in emotional regulation – Trauma survivors often experience dysregulation in their nervous system, and therapy dogs provide grounding and stability.

·       Encourage mindfulness – Being present with a dog, focusing on their breathing, warmth, and soft fur, helps bring people into the present moment.

Sam explained how therapy dogs are trained to respond to emotional distress, offering deep pressure therapy by leaning against a person or lying across their lap, which can have a calming effect. This kind of intervention is particularly useful for individuals with PTSD, anxiety, and depression.

Part 2: Real Stories of Transformation

In the second part of our interview, Sam shared some inspiring real-life examples of how therapy dogs have helped people recover from trauma. One powerful story was about a veteran who struggled with severe PTSD and found solace in the unwavering support of his therapy dog, Max. Before Max came into his life, simple tasks like going to the grocery store were overwhelming. But with Max by his side, acting as both a comfort and a grounding presence, he was able to regain confidence and independence.

Another story highlighted a young child with autism who had difficulty with social interactions and emotional regulation. With the help of a therapy dog, the child began to develop communication skills, manage meltdowns more effectively, and even form deeper connections with family members.

The Holistic Power of Animal-Assisted Therapy

One of the most profound takeaways from our discussion with Sam was how therapy dogs bridge the gap between traditional, evidence-based psychological practices and holistic healing. They don’t just provide emotional support—they actively assist in regulating the body's nervous system, promoting emotional resilience, and helping people reconnect with themselves and the world around them.

As Sam so beautifully put it:

"Therapy dogs have this incredible ability to meet people where they are, without judgment, without expectation—just pure, unconditional presence."

Bringing Therapy Dogs Into Your Life

If you’re interested in working with a therapy dog, there are several ways to explore this path:

·       Seek out animal-assisted therapy programs – Many therapists now incorporate trained therapy dogs into their practice.

·       Consider adopting or fostering a trained therapy dog – Some organizations specialize in placing therapy dogs with individuals in need.

·       Get involved in therapy dog training – If you have a dog with a calm temperament, you might even consider training them to be a therapy dog!

Final Thoughts

Therapy dogs remind us of the deep, healing connection between humans and animals. Whether you’ve experienced trauma, struggle with anxiety, or simply need a comforting presence, these remarkable animals have the power to transform lives.
