Do parts of you feel out of control?

Struggling with fear, rejection, addiction, anger, or sadness?

Do you ever feel stuck in patterns you can’t break?

If this resonates, you’re not alone and you may get benefit and relief from Resource Therapy.

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing internationally renowned Resource Therapy experts Philipa Thornton and Chris Paulin to explore how this groundbreaking therapy can help people heal from trauma, resolve inner conflicts, and foster emotional well-being.

Leaders in Resource Therapy

Philipa Thornton – Psychologist, Resource Therapy Master Trainer, and President of Resource Therapy International. With over 25 years of experience in trauma recovery, relationship healing, and personality-parts therapy, Philipa co-founded Resource Therapy Institute Australia and Marriage Works. She specializes in equipping therapists with cutting-edge techniques that create deep, lasting change.

Chris Paulin – Consultant Psychologist, Resource Therapy Master Trainer, and Imago Relationship Therapist. With over 40 years in mental health, Chris has worked extensively with individuals, couples, and therapists to strengthen relationships and overcome personal struggles.

Together, they have trained countless therapists in Resource Therapy and continue to make a global impact through workshops, training programs, and international conferences.

What is Resource Therapy?

Resource Therapy (RT) is a powerful therapeutic approach that works with different parts of the psyche—or “resource states”—to heal trauma and break free from unwanted behaviors, emotional struggles, and limiting beliefs. Unlike traditional talk therapy, which often focuses on cognitive insights, RT works directly with the emotional states causing distress, making it a fast and effective therapy.

💡 Key Idea: We all have different resource states that shape how we think, feel, and act.

  • Example: You have a work part that focuses on productivity, a social part that enjoys connection, and a protective part that might avoid conflict.

  • When parts work together, life flows smoothly. But when they hold unresolved trauma or inner conflict, we get stuck in self-sabotaging patterns, anxiety, or emotional pain.

How Resource Therapy Helps

✅ Resolves trauma by working with the specific part holding the emotional pain

✅ Helps people stop self-sabotage, procrastination, or destructive behaviors

✅ Improves self-confidence and emotional resilience

✅ Enhances relationships by resolving internal conflicts

Signs You May Benefit from Resource Therapy

Philipa and Chris explain that unhealed resource states often show up as:

Repeating negative life patterns (e.g., always choosing toxic partners, avoiding success)

Unexplained emotional reactions (e.g., overreacting to small triggers, social anxiety)

Procrastination & self-sabotage

Addictions or compulsions (e.g., emotional eating, excessive working, avoidance)

Feeling "stuck" or emotionally numb

🌟 Case Study: One client struggled with crippling stage fright at work, despite being highly skilled. Using Resource Therapy, they discovered a young part of themselves that had been shamed in school for speaking up. Once that part was healed, they effortlessly delivered presentations without fear.

How Resource Therapy Resolves Inner Conflict

Many people experience internal battles between different resource states:

➡️ Part of me wants to rest, but another part feels guilty for not working.

➡️ I want to leave this toxic relationship, but I feel too afraid or unworthy.

➡️ I know I should stop drinking, but a part of me needs to escape stress.

Resource Therapy resolves these struggles by:

🔹 Helping parts communicate and cooperate

🔹 Identifying parts that need healing, empowerment, or a role shift

🔹 Releasing unwanted emotions like fear, shame, and guilt

Chris shares that once parts recognize each other’s value, they stop fighting for control, leading to greater inner harmony and personal freedom.

Real-Life Success Stories

Philipa and Chris have seen life-changing transformations using RT. Here are some powerful examples:

🔹 Overcoming Phobias: A client with a fear of lizards found the root cause—being laughed at when a lizard fell on her as a child. After RT, her fear dissolved instantly.

🔹 Healing from Panic Attacks: A man suffering from claustrophobia in changing rooms realized it was linked to a near-suffocation experience from pneumonia years ago. Once healed, the panic attacks disappeared.

🔹 Escaping Narcissistic Abuse: A woman struggling with boundaries and self-worth with a narcissistic mother used RT to heal childhood wounds and find an empowered adult part to manage the relationship with confidence.

Healing Starts Here: Take the First Step

💬 “You are not broken. You are carrying parts of you that need support and encouragement. With the right tools, you can break free and create the life you truly deserve.” – Philipa Thornton

If you’re struggling with emotional pain, past trauma, or inner conflict, Resource Therapy offers a fast, effective path to healing.

Self-Help Strategies to Get Started

📖 Read "Happy Parts, Happy Self” by Gordon Emerson – a great introduction to RT techniques📝 Journal: Identify and name your resource states (e.g., “Work Mode,” “Inner Critic,” “Adventurous Self”)❤️ Practice self-compassion: Place your hand over your heart and send love to the parts of you that feel scared, stuck, or unworthy
